Architectural Photographer in York

York’s architecture is dominated by history in a way few other UK cities can match, which makes photographing new work there particularly interesting.

I work across York and North Yorkshire for architects, designers, developers and businesses, photographing historic buildings, contemporary interventions, residential projects, interiors and commercial spaces.

With heritage projects, the details often matter as much as the overall building. Original stone and brickwork, timber, joinery and carefully introduced new materials can tell much more about a project than one wide photograph. I therefore tend to build a set gradually, combining the images that explain the architecture with tighter compositions that show the craftsmanship behind it.

The city centre also presents the usual practical challenge of photographing architecture in a busy historic environment: narrow streets, limited viewpoints and plenty of people. Those constraints can actually produce more interesting compositions, provided there’s enough time to work around them.

Further out into North Yorkshire, the emphasis can change completely, with landscape and setting becoming much more important to residential and rural architecture.

I’m based in Sheffield and work throughout Yorkshire, so York is comfortably within my regular working area.
