Client: Thread Architects
Project Location: Belper, Derbyshire
A compact new-build eco house in Belper, photographed for Thread Architects. The house was built within the garden of the clients’ previous home, making clever use of the site while still feeling surprisingly private and connected to the surrounding Derbyshire landscape.
The design is simple but full of subtle details, with timber cladding, crisp rendered elevations and a large glazed gable bringing plenty of natural light into the house. The warm plywood-lined interior gives the main living space a completely different character, while the garden structures and timber screening help connect the new house with its outdoor spaces.
I photographed the project from the ground and by drone, using the aerial views to show how the house sits within the existing neighbourhood and the countryside beyond. I also produced a short drone video to give Thread Architects a wider set of material for their portfolio and social media.
It happened to be an exceptionally hot day for the shoot, but the house itself was remarkably comfortable inside thanks to its ground-source heating and cooling system — a fairly convincing demonstration of the thinking behind the building. The finished photography combines wider architectural views, interiors, details and aerial images to give a complete picture of this small but carefully considered home.
