Manchester is another city I regularly travel to from Sheffield for architectural and commercial commissions. It’s close enough to be part of my normal working area, and its mix of Victorian industry and large-scale contemporary development makes it a particularly interesting place to photograph.

I’ve worked across Manchester and the surrounding area photographing commercial interiors, product installations, residential developments and architecture for designers, developers and manufacturers.

The older industrial buildings are often the most interesting. Heavy brickwork, large windows and retained structural elements give adaptive-reuse projects a visual character that’s difficult to reproduce in a completely new building. At the same time, Manchester’s newer commercial and residential developments need a very different approach, particularly when scale and position within the skyline are important.

My shoots usually combine wider architectural views with closer photographs of materials, interiors and details. For larger sites, drone photography can help establish the project’s relationship with the surrounding city in a way that’s difficult from ground level.

As with all my architectural work, I plan around available light rather than treating every hour of the day as equal. A relatively ordinary view at midday can become the strongest photograph of the shoot when low evening light reaches the façade.
